The basics

What Are Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars?

Columns, towers, pillars and balloon posts all describe the same thing: balloons stacked up a pole that stands on a weighted base.

Because a balloon column stands by itself, usually 5 to 8 feet tall, it can go almost anywhere: beside a front door, at both ends of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or next to a convention booth. Columns are the most adaptable piece we make and the simplest way to add height to a room without hanging a thing.

They're also the budget-friendly way to mark an entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and you can join their tops with an arch later for the classic columns-plus-arch combination you see at school dances and grand openings.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

Every column starts with the same pole and base. The pattern wrapped around it is what changes.

Classic stacked columns

Four-balloon clusters stacked snugly up the pole, in a single color or in color blocks. Bold, clean and the least expensive column we build.

Spiral balloon columns in two, three or four colors

Shift the colors one position in each cluster and they corkscrew up the column. Two colors look crisp, three colors are the most popular (think red, white and blue for the Fourth), and four colors work for rainbow parties and team themes.

Organic balloon columns

Loose clusters of mixed sizes give a fuller, softer column that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons than classic columns and cost a bit more, and they're the go-to for weddings and showers.

Themed and novelty columns

A column can become something else entirely: a pencil for back-to-school, a palm tree for a pool party, a traffic light for a race-car birthday, a candy cane or Grinch at Christmas, a guitar-topped tower for a music-themed party. Themed columns are a fun way to dress up a classroom hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers

The topper is what ties a column to your celebration.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number showing an age, an anniversary or a class year. It's the column style we're asked for most.
  • Foil stars, hearts and crowns: a natural finish for grads, Valentine's parties and a quinceañera's court.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear balloon filled with confetti or feathers, or printed with a name.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: made for grad parties and senior nights.
  • Western and music toppers: foil boots, hats, guitars and stars for cowgirl birthdays and themed bachelorette weekends.
  • Logo or letter panels: for corporate events and shop openings.

Sizing

Balloon Column Heights and Balloon Counts

A standard column stands about 6 feet tall before the topper goes on.

Column heights and balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop column2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic column7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic column5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

These counts cover the column body only. The topper, the base and any clusters around the foot add a few more.

What size balloon for a column? Most columns are built from 11-inch latex in clusters of four, which makes a column roughly 18 to 20 inches wide. Organic columns add 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in Nashville?

A single column usually lands between $85 and $250, depending on the style and the topper.

Our balloon column prices
ColumnStarting at
Mini tabletop column$55
Classic column$85
Spiral column (2–4 colors)$99
Themed column (graduation, holiday, western)$135
Organic column$145
Balloon tower with a number or star topper$165

Each price is for one column, delivered and placed within about 35 miles of downtown Nashville.

How much for two balloon columns? Most doorways get a pair, so budget about $170–$500 for two depending on style. A pair costs less than two singles booked separately, and joining them with an arch costs less than ordering the pieces on their own.

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Go

Columns look best in pairs with something between them.

Entrances

On both sides of a front door, a venue entry or a shop front, so nobody has to wonder where the party is.

Stages and band setups

At each end of a stage, a DJ table or a live band's riser, so performers and speakers are framed in every picture.

Ceremony aisles

Short columns down the aisle at a barn or garden ceremony, or a tall pair where the couple says their vows.

Dance floors

At the corners of the floor, sometimes linked overhead with a garland canopy.

Convention and expo booths

Brand-color columns help a booth stand out from the far end of a crowded exhibit hall.

Gyms, cafeterias and church halls

Rows of school-color columns for graduations, prom, homecoming, senior night and fundraisers.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Grad Parties, Weddings, Birthdays and Bachelorettes

Grad season keeps us busiest with columns in Nashville, but they suit nearly any event.

  • Graduation: balloon columns and towers in school colors with caps, stars or the class year, for high school grads, Vanderbilt, Belmont and Lipscomb celebrations and MTSU parties in Murfreesboro.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: soft organic columns in ivory, gold or blush marking the ceremony spot and the reception door.
  • Birthdays: a birthday column crowned with the guest of honor's age, whether they're turning one or sixty.
  • Bachelorette weekends: pink and silver towers with boot, hat or disco toppers on either side of the rental-house door.
  • Gender reveals: a pink column and a blue column with a big question mark waiting on top.
  • Company events and expos: columns in your brand palette for lobbies, ribbon cuttings and booth corners.
  • Holidays: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and red, white and blue for the 4th of July.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in Nashville Weather

Tall and top-heavy, columns act like sails in a breeze, so outdoor ones are built differently.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases, and we tie them to a porch post, rail or fence whenever one is close by.
  • Air-filled columns outlast helium ones outdoors by a wide margin.
  • Shade makes the difference in a Nashville summer: direct sun fades and pops latex within a few hours, and dark shades heat up first.
  • When an afternoon storm is in the forecast, we place columns where a building or wall breaks the wind, and we'd rather move them under cover than risk a tip-over.

Longevity

How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?

Days indoors. A few hours in July sun.

Inside with air conditioning, an air-filled column keeps its shape for several days and often a week. In outdoor shade it holds up for about a day, and in full summer sun it starts oxidizing and popping within a few hours. Indoor columns can be built one to two days early, which helps with morning graduations and school events. In winter, keep them inside until party time, since freezing air makes the balloons shrink.

Questions

Balloon Columns in Nashville: FAQ

What are balloon columns?

Balloon columns are freestanding stacks of balloons built up a pole on a weighted base, usually 5 to 8 feet tall. They're used in pairs at entrances and stages, or in rows along aisles and gyms.

How much do people charge for balloon columns?

Ours start at $85 for a classic column, $99 for a spiral, $145 for an organic column and $165 for a tower with a number or star topper, delivered and set in place. Most entrances use a pair.

How much does a balloon tower cost?

A balloon tower with a foil number or star topper starts at $165 each. Organic towers and custom toppers like logos or bubble balloons cost more.

How many balloons does one column take?

A classic 5–6 ft column uses roughly 40–60 balloons at 11 inches each; a taller 7–8 ft column needs 60–80. Organic columns in mixed sizes run 60–100 or more.

Which balloon size do you use for columns?

Standard columns are built from 11-inch latex grouped four to a cluster. For organic columns we blend in 5-inch fillers and 16- to 18-inch accents.

How long does a balloon column last?

Indoors with air, it holds up for several days. Give it about a day in outdoor shade, and only a few hours if it's sitting in full Nashville summer sun.

How early can you build balloon columns?

One to two days ahead for indoor events. Outdoor columns in warm weather should be set up on the day.

Can you put a number on top of a column?

Yes, and it's our most requested finish. We use 34- or 40-inch foil numbers to show an age, an anniversary or a graduating class year.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. Columns are air-filled and supported by a pole and weighted base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.
